Assesment

The diagnosis of ADHD/ADD is determined by a good assessment.  Unfortunately, there are both untrained people overdiagnosing ADHD/ADD as well as untrained people underdiagnosing ADD/ADHD.  The only way to diagnose ADD/ADHD is through a thorough clinical interview with the individual as well as their family members.  Neither brain scans nor questionnaires have been proven to determine an accurate diagnosis.  A neuro/psycho/educational assessment may be conducted to learn about the person's strengths and weaknesses and will be required if the person is requesting educational accommodations.

At the Bay Area Center for ADD/ADHD, you can meet with a therapist or a psychiatrist to begin a clinical interview to determine the diagnosis.  This can be accomplished in one or two sessions and may include filling out some questionnaires and talking to parents (even those of adults).  Our clinicians are specialists in ADD/ADHD, so they will not only help you understand whether it is ADD/ADHD that you are dealing with, but help discuss your treatment options.
