ADHD Training and Certification

Bay Area Center for ADHD

&

The Institute for the Advancement of
Psychotherapy:

ADHD Training & Certification

ADHD can be a confusing diagnosis, treatment and conceptualization for therapists. With 78% of clients also having comorbid diagnoses, and confusion among clinicians regarding who is even qualified to diagnose ADHD, it takes a deeper understanding to provide effective, evidence based treatment. There are a number of ADHD training programs and certificate programs available, although they often don't have standards of core competencies which a clinician should have a deep understanding of. The Bay Area Center for ADHD and the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy have created a certification training program to ensure clinicians have the evidence based knowledge, the depth of experience, and are using effective approaches with their clients.

In this training, you will obtain training in the 13 core competencies involved in ADHD assessment and treatment in children, adolescents, and adults. You will gain a lifespan understanding of the presentation of ADHD, as well as evidence based treatments to help clients with ADHD thrive. You will also understand neurodiversity and helping to empower clients with ADHD to live their best lives:

Core Competencies:
1 - Neurodiversity
2 - Diagnosis Development
3 - Etiology of ADHD
4 - ADHD Neuroscience
5 - Conceptualization of ADHD
6 - Assessment
7 - Comorbidities
8 - ADHD Medication
9 - Treatment of Children
10 - Treatment of Adolescents
11 - School Interventions
12 - Treatment of Adults
13 - ADHD in the Workplace
14 - Treatment of Couples

The path to certification starts with Level 1 - Foundations, which is 32 hours of training in the foundations that every clinician needs when working with ADHD. Level 2 - Advanced Skills where the clinicians will deepen their skills in assessment and treatment. Level 3 - Specialization where the clinicians will go deeper into areas of specialization such as having a specialization in children with ADHD, couples with ADHD, etc. Clinicians will obtain consultation in individual or group format, and submit session videos for review for certification. We welcome those who are seeking a deeper understanding of ADHD assessment and treatment and an expertise built on core competencies.
Level 1: Foundations
In the Level 1 training, you will be learning the areas which all clinicians providing assessment and treatment for ADHD should have as core competencies. Whether the clinician is focused in working with children or couples, every clinician needs to understand the ways that ADHD effects clients throughout their lifetime, and also their family members who have a higher likelihood of having ADHD, due to heritability.

The training will be provided by Dr. Keith Sutton, the director of the Bay Area Center for ADHD, who has worked with clients with ADHD since 1998 in multiple settings and specializing since 2007. Dr. Sutton provides clinical assessment as well as psychoeducational evaluations, and treats children, adolescents, families, couples and adults with ADHD. In addition to providing training in ADHD, he also provides training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Structural-Strategic Family Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, and Motivational Interviewing. Dr. Sutton bases his work in evidence based information and treatment for his clients with ADHD, and has been training, supervising and providing consultation to hundreds of clinicians working with ADHD.
