ADD/ADHD can cause a great deal of distress for couples. Many partners of people who have ADD/ADHD sometimes feel like their partner does not care for them because they don't follow through on what they say, don't listen to their partner, avoid informing their partners about concerns due to shame and secretiveness, and/or they become emotionally reactive. The consequences from ADD/ADHD can cause distress both to the person who has ADD/ADHD and their partner.
At the Bay Area Center for ADD/ADHD, we understand the effects that ADD/ADHD has both on the partner and on the person living with it. We understand that many have gone undiagnosed, so we can first figure out if it is ADD/ADHD that you are dealing with or whether it's something else. Once we know what the problem is, we can assist the person in seeking help. We help the partner and the person with ADD/ADHD learn how to deal with the symptoms in order to rebuild their relationship. Unfortunately, there are many therapists who are not familiar with both ADD/ADHD and how to do couples therapy, but fortunately our therapists are specialists.
